Single-Use Plastics Directive Backgrounder

While headlines around the world continue to reveal a grim picture of discarded plastics in our environment, in the EU, real action is taking place.

On 19th December 2018, a trialogue agreement was reached by the European Parliament and the Council on the Single-Use Plastics Directive for the reduction of certain plastic products in the environment. The new legislation will be published in the EU’s Official Journal before the end of the Parliament’s legislative session in Spring 2019. Member states will then have two years to transpose the Directive into their own national legislation.

In light of this new policy development, Reloop has prepared a short backgrounder to summarize some of the key elements of the Directive, including what measures have been proposed to minimize the usage of single-use plastic items.

Read the backgrounder.
